Shorter construction timeframes often mean architecture that does double-duty; in this instance, the title wall also serves as a display for a large, historical and delicate tapestry.
Specific space is designated in this exhibition for rest and for interaction. The visitor reflectino area allows visitors to take a break, and to process their thoughts in a quiet location. Meanwhile, the visitor feedback station prompts visitors to consider what they’ve seen and share, through a written card, their stories, feelings, or personal histories.
Afro-Atlantic Histories
Afro-Atlantic Histories is an exhibition that explores the history of the African Diaspora and the Trans-Atlantic slave trade through the lens of art. A combined collection of historical and contemporary artworks and an intensive and challenging subject matter called for a design that would highlight the objects and provide subtle design cues while not overwhelming the visitor. At the same time, space for personal reflection both in the galleries and adjacent provide the visitor with the opportunity to connect more deeply with the work, and an interactive feedback station prompts the visitor to leave comments about their own personal histories. A bright golden title wall with dimensional lettering draws the visitor to take a closer look, and is complemented by pieces from the exhibition. Bright colors are deployed on the back wall of each separate gallery, while the compelling and larger-than-life portrait placed on the center sightline pulls the visitor in further.
